The Mystery of the Halloween Thieves

This grades 3-4 Readers’ Theater brain teaser mystery script will give students Halloween scares and giggles. The Mystery of the Halloween Thieves readers’ theater script will engage both ELA and drama classes. It requires learners to use critical thinking skills and make inferences from context clues to reveal the identities of two thieves. The script is intended for about 10 students but the number of readers can easily be contracted or expanded, depending on how many groups you wish to have.

This funny, high interest story is about a Halloween in which a sister and brother known for being ‘unmotivated’ (some might say lazy!) have a much more active 31st of October than they had hoped for. They have to track down TWO Halloween thieves, one at school and one during an evening trick or treating. Phew! They definitely need your students’ help to solve the clues.

Students not only have to assist in the solution of the two mysteries, but also discuss and write on four questions and complete a journal entry. Completing the resource are two fun extension activities: a page of mix and match spooky jokes and a Halloween ‘Find the Missing Objects’ detection activity. 5 Halloween coloring borders will keep early finishers happy and engaged!

Question sheets and answers are included.

The Mystery of the Haunted House
The Mystery of the Haunted House script will entertain your students and require them to perform inference tasks to solve three major clues. The script is intended for about 9 students but the number of readers can easily be contracted or expanded depending on how many groups you wish to have.

This funny and engaging story revolves around the claim that a house is haunted. A boy seeking to raise money for a fashionable new pair of basketball shoes is trying to pull a scam. Only the teamwork of twins (a sister and brother) can solve the clues to reveal the scheme. Your students will enjoy testing their wits against those of the characters!

Students have to discuss and write on six topics, complete a journal entry, and also design a ‘spot the difference’ drawing for a fellow student. The resource ends with two pages of spooky jokes. These jokes have been separated from their punchlines. Students have to use their comprehension skills to reunite the jokes and answers.

Question sheets and answers are included.

The easiest way to present some of the activities, like the mysteries and writing races, is to show them on your screen. The answers to the brainteaser stories have been placed on separate pages to avoid spoilers ruining the fun of being a Halloween detective. The writing races could be completed on scraps of paper from the recycling bin.

Some of the activities need to be photocopied. To promote classroom spirit and to save on photocopying, some of the activities could be completed in pairs. Again, to reduce the required amount of photocopying, you could put all of the activity guidelines and all of the answer keys up on your screen.

The Internet is not required for any of the games.

I hope that your students have lots of fun and spooky spirit!
