What educators are saying

This resource was very helpful after reading The Great Gatsby. It allowed us to really analyze the film in comparison to the text (CCRA.7)
Watching the movie after we read each chapter was very beneficial to student comprehension and engagement.

Description

My chapter-by-chapter movie outline is SUPER HELPFUL when I show my students the 2013 The Great Gatsby film by Baz Luhrman. On this sheet, I've broken down the movie into the nine chapters of the book by including timestamps from the movie AND I've also included the dialogue or narration to be listening for as you watch so you can stop the movie at the end of each chapter without having to pause and see how far you are to the right timestamp. (I hope that makes sense!)

In other words, at first, I just put in the timestamps on this sheet, but then when I showed the movie, I noticed I was having to stop to see how far we were to, for example, the end of chapter six or 1:25:50 in the movie. So I just watched again, wrote down what was happening or what was being said at that time (Toby McGuire [Nick] says Gatsby's lights went out one by one.) and then included that also so you don't have to be constantly watching the time.

This movie is so engaging!!! Students love it. I know some teachers prefer other versions, but for me, THIS ONE GETS THE GREEN LIGHT!

I hope this sheet makes your students' experience with this movie even more awesome.
