Description

Are you looking for a graphic organizer for your STEM students to organize their rough sketches and brainstorm possible ideas? Trying to scaffold student learning to encourage more than one solution when planning a prototype? Try using a Thumbnail Sketch Planning Document!

This one page PDF graphic organizer is a great way for students to rough out their ideas while encouraging them to consider more than one possible solution to the problem. Thumbnail sketches allow students to focus on rough ideas rather than the finer details. This can be a great starting place at the beginning of a design challenge!

Once complete, students can pull the best design aspects from each design to create a more comprehensive sketch of their final prototype.

NGSSK-2-ETS1-2
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSHS-ETS1-2
Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-2
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
