Put Geology in Time and Space Context!

Temporal Scale

30 different task cards guide students through a web exploration of 30 geologic processes. The questions included on the cards explore the temporal scale of the various geologic processes. An answer sheet for students to use is included, as well as an answer key.

Care was taken to choose websites that should remain online and with appropriate content.

In order to use these task cards, students will need a computer or mobile device. Full disclosure: one task card will not work on a mobile device.

The task cards on temporal scale of geologic processes should take about 90 – 120 minutes.

Spatial Scale

A worksheet, also requiring a computer, designed to be used after the temporal scale cards, explores the spatial extent of a select set of geologic processes. This worksheet, web research, and a discussion should take about 60 minutes.

NGSS

This lesson addresses NGSS standard MS-ESS2-2 - Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales.
This lesson is designed to allow students to collect the evidence needed to construct an explanation as required in the performance expectation for MS-ESS2-2. Suggestions are included for an activity that allows students to construct an explanation.
