What educators are saying

I was looking for some ideas as to how to create an MTSS group surrounding family history and the study of geneaology. This fit the bill! Thanks for the resouce.

Description

Looking to find a different approach to US History? My Genealogy Project US History is a great way to learn about your ancestors. It explains what Genealogy is. It includes 7 steps, rubric, city project, and links to websites.

"Very detailed and well-thought-out resource, complete with alternative project options. I found it very helpful.'

UPDATED: I just added a bunch of pictures from this year's projects. I have also added a primary source document cover sheet for the project when it gets turned in.

A couple of years ago I was sitting on a couch thinking about my family and where they might have come from. I was also wondering if all the things my dad had told me were true about my family. I decided to take it upon my self to find out. This is the result of 7 years of working on this project to finally get it dialed in.

A couple of years ago I was really frustrated by the lack of learning that was going on in my classroom. I really wanted my students to take something away from the class that would impact them for life. I did not want them to just have a pretty poster or something that would find its way to the trash can. I thought since people's heritage is personal and is timeless that it would make a great case study into the families in my American History class. The students have been really excited about this project as I have been doing this project for a number of years now. It has opened communication doors with the local library and with the parents and grandparents of these incredible kids. I know they may not care about their heritage now, but they will as they get older. If you have any questions please email me as I have worked really hard on this semester-long project.

Here are some common questions:

1. I have a kid who is adopted and a kid in a foster home. Do you tell them to do the city project? Yes, he should do the city project.

2. With the city project, they choose the city they grew up in, here in the states? Like if they grew up in Houston, then the research would be about Houston? The city his family is from is better. Not city he is born in.

3. Did you have to send any form home to families regarding privacy issues?  I have been doing this project for many years and have never had any privacy issues.

4. You have a folder labeled EC with a photo.  What does that stand for and what is it?  Early Conversations?  Didn't see that on rubric.  The EC is a letter to me about the positive things that you learned or took away from this project. Check out the google drive link to see samples.

5. I am assuming you do this project along with your curriculum? I teach world history and US Govt.  9 weeks in a semester, block classes 1 hour and 20 min. Very small classes, no larger than 14.  You think it would be possible to get it done if not, some of it? Yes, I do it right along with the curriculum. Absolutely, it would actually work better with smaller classes. Try to schedule research days on Friday and try to partner up with the local library or genealogy department to see if they would be willing to help out.

US History, History Channel, Genealogy, Ancestry, Geni, Project, ESL, Brent Pillsbury, Social Studies, Education, common core standards

I use these guys for my DNA check with the students. I make this optional as it does cost money. They are reputable and are an absolute joy to deal with.
