Description
I'm so glad you're here. School can be an amazing place to learn and be in community with others. It can also be a really tricky place to navigate for Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people.
Although supporting students through a neurodiversity-affirming lens can lead to positive social-emotional and learning outcomes for both neurodivergent and neurotypical kids, awareness about neurodiversity and neurodiversity-affirming practices within the schools is just emerging. This means that you might be the first person to share this information with some members of your school team. This can be exciting, but also intimidating for parents, neurodiversity-affirming school professionals, and students who want to self-advocate. This resource is designed to make the process of sharing information about neurodiversity easier and more approachable for you.
I also hope to help you do this in a way that fosters genuine collaboration with your school team. I respect teachers and school-based therapists. I've been a school-based therapist and I know how hard they work and how much they care. This is just fundamentally different from many of us were trained. I know that change can only happen if we lead with empathy, curiosity, and collaboration. When we believe that everyone on the team has the best of intentions, we have the best chance of fostering greater and more meaningful inclusion within our communities.
