Description

Make expressions review and practice a blast with this print-and-go Doodle Math activity! Includes two levels with 18 problems total to practice simplifying expressions by combining like terms with positive and negative coefficients. Each correct answer unlocks doodle patterns to complete template images perfect for any time of year. If your students love color by number or color by code, they’ll love Doodle Math!

It's easy to differentiate with two levels of difficulty:

  • Level 1 contains expressions with solutions that contain only positive integer coefficients. Students do not need to know how to add or subtract negative numbers.
  • Level 2 requires combining terms with negative coefficients, so students will need to know how to add/subtract negative integers.

The levels can be assigned separately or together.

What's included?

✅ Problem pages (4 pages, 2 levels, 18 questions)

✅ 2 image sheets with designated sections for doodling (2 pages)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Karen S. - “Just a good fun activity during the holidays for practicing skills! Great product!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐️ Christine M. - “I put this out as an extra credit assignment for my 8th graders at the end of the square and cube roots unit. The students who chose to do it seemed to enjoy the "doodle" part because it was different than a typical color by number task. Thank you!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Carly S. - “My students really loved this and it worked really well in my classroom!”

Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 and 3𝘺 are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number 𝘺 stands for.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, 𝘢 + 0.05𝘢 = 1.05𝘢 means that “increase by 5%” is the same as “multiply by 1.05.”
