Description

These creative enrichment tasks develop flexibility and deeper understanding of 4th and 5th grade fraction standards. This math coach created resource was designed for different uses:

  • Print out weekly packets for confident learners in grades 4-6.

So much more than just showing off what is already known!

Designed to scaffold new ideas.

  • Provide individual pages in math centers in grades 4-8.

Tasks provide a mental math approach to fractions that benefit ALL learners.

*These enrichment packets for grades 4, 5 and 6 are also appropriate for grades 7/8 to develop fraction intuition and number sense.

INCLUDES:

  1. Fraction Smash
  2. Fraction Operation Puzzles (mental addition, subtraction, multiplication by whole number only)
  3. Mystery Number
  4. Creamy Conundrum Algebraic Ice Cream Fun!
  5. What is the question?
  6. W.O.D.B?
  7. Know Your Value Balance Scale
  8. Fraction Paths
  9. Bonus Task

  • 60 Pages of organized, spiraled tasks
  • 8 Blank templates for student created tasks
  • Answer Keys
  • Google Slides Bonus Link

DIRECTIONS: These packets are organized for flexibility! Each topic packet (decimals, fractions, place value, area puzzles and algebraic challenges) are ordered by task type and labeled A-F so that

  • you can easily find & print the single-page tasks you can use for the whole class
  • you can easily print & create 5 Packets (packet A, packet B) for your advanced learners.

*If you purchased the growing bundle, you will also have the option to download pre-created packets blending ALL of the topics to last all year long! This is how I designed them. I much prefer a spiraling of ideas since we should not be working with decimal numbers only during decimal instruction. The tasks are spaced out since they are all mixed up for the year. This also allows for missed connections to be developed months later. Also, each mega-packet has a cover page from the growth mindset math coloring collection.

GROWING BUNDLE will include:

*If you didn't purchase the bundle, but you wish you did, email me at themathviking@gmail.com and I will make sure you don't miss out on the savings.

Explain why a fraction ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ is equivalent to a fraction (๐˜ฏ ร— ๐˜ข)/(๐˜ฏ ร— ๐˜ฃ) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand a fraction ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ with ๐˜ข > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/๐˜ฃ.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
