Food Chain Mini-Project Rubric

This project was designed for middle school students, but could easily be used for upper elementary as well! This could also be expanded to a food web project by having students connect their food chains together once finished.

In this project, students will use index cards to create a food chain with at least 7 different organisms. The food chains should all begin with the Sun as the primary source of energy for the food chain. Then, the food chain should show the energy from the sun being transferred to a producer of their choice. Students will then add to their food chain to show the different type of consumers: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Each index card should include a complete sentence on the back to explain where each organism gets their energy from and to identify what type of consumer that organism is.
