Description
In this activity, students are given 9 organisms that would live in a forest. They cut the organisms out and create food chains with them. (There are several correct versions of food chains so students will see that often animals will at may different things in a forest). The students then take the concept further by creating a food web of the organisms. This really allows them to see how interconnected the organisms in a forest are. Finally they can then create energy pyramids with those organisms.
This is a great hands on activity to teach, apply or asses food chains and food webs!
Tips for Distance Learning: Cut and Paste sorting activities are great for interactive learning and application of concepts, but can be tricky to do in distance learning. Here are some ideas on how to use these in this crazy time we are experiencing.
If your students have a printer and can get access to the sort documents:
•Since these are PDF’s, you can not just share 1 page. This method is quite unconventional and will take some time, but in these times….
Take a screenshot of the page you want students to use and then paste it into a Google doc.
•Have students print and then cut out the sections and place them in what they think is the correct spot.
•Then either have them send a picture to you on Google classroom, review the sort in a Zoom session or post an answer key for them to check their answers (this works as a formative assignment).
If your students do not have access to the documents or a printer try this:
•In a Zoom session- give students the categories you are sorting into.
•Read each example and have students decide which category it belongs to. Then review the answers. This is another formative assignment.
GOOD LUCK!
