What educators are saying

My students were engaged with this activity. I had one student say he felt like a doctor after this activity! Very helpful resource that was super easy to implement.

Description

I absolutely love treating children and adults with fluency disorders. I’ve found some great materials online, but I also wanted to design a few of my own that reflect my therapy philosophy. Stuttering is a neurologically based disorder, with a multidimensional presentation. When we focus solely on “smooth talking” and “easy speech” without addressing the other complexities, we do the child a disservice. You can learn more about my treatment philosophy by downloading the preview: Parent Intro to Stuttering Therapy.

Here's what you will receive in this packet:

Page 2: Parent Intro to Stuttering Therapy: A one-page info sheet that briefly outlines the nature of stuttering, introduces parents to key terminology, and provides ways to support students at home.
Pages 3-5: My Speaking System: A hands-on activity designed to teach kids about the relevant anatomy. Color and grayscale versions are included.
Page 6: My Stuttering Fingerprint: Students explore the unique features of their stuttering pattern with this fun activity.
Page 7: My Speech Cards: Continue exploration of individual stuttering patterns with this versatile activity. Examples and ideas of how to use them are provided.
Page 8: My Speaking Ladder: Students consider the impact of different speaking situations and communication partners on their speech. By listing them hierarchically, students create a roadmap to planning shaming-busting and motor exercises.
Pages 9-10: Speech Creature Craftivity: Make fun pop up speech creatures to externalize speech behaviors and practice forward moving talking
Page 11: “Did You Know…?” Sentence Strips: Speech creatures love eating "Did you know...?" sentence strips! Practice asking/answering using a selected speech behavior.
Page 12: “Would You Rather…” Sentence Strips: Speech creatures love eating "Would You Rather...?" cards too! Practice asking/answering using a selected speech behavior.
Page 13: Reducing Tension: Students practice modulating tension while voluntary stuttering. The practice passages are about famous people who stutter.
Page 14: Stuttering Fact Sheet: The great worksheet provides links to a few kid-friendly credible websites about stuttering and gives space for note-taking.
Page 15: Speaking Challenges: This homework page includes 24 prompts to get kids talking. With help from an adult, students reflect and evaluate their speaking fluency and use of motor strategies.
