Fluency Fans: Nonsense Words {CVC: All Vowels}

What are Nonsense Word Fluency Fans?
Nonsense Word Fluency Fans are groups of fan “blades” that students can use to practice their fluent reading of nonsense words. Each blade contains a list of 5 different nonsense words and there are 50 in all.

In this set, the initial and final consonants of the nonsense word remain the same across all 5 words on the fluency fan blade and each vowel is represented once. As the only thing that changes on each individual blade is the vowel, occasionally a real word sneaks in.

Why Nonsense Words?
When students read nonsense words they are relying solely on their letter-sound knowledge to decode the words. There is no possibility for the student to use context clues from a sentence or story to assist them in the decoding of the word. That’s a good thing!

How To Use Nonsense Word Fluency Fans
Introduce first to your students in small reading groups and then move to a literacy center as an independent activity when appropriate.
