This was a great resource to help me include more information about indigenous people in my social studies unit.

Description

Engaging activities on First Nations in Early Canada include: read, complete graphic organizers, play with words, critical thinking, crosswords, word search PLUS more. This book of activities was created as a companion to "Early First Nations People of Canada". Use for "fast finishers". The booklet may also stand alone. Grade 3 Social Studies curriculum. Great for differentiated learning. Answer keys provided.

Activities Include:

  • examine and interpret tipi designs
  • critical thinking exercise on the theme of berries
  • readings on the soapberry, totem poles and the cedar tree
  • listening exercise or follow the directions exercise: on the plains theme
  • word search: on the theme of different groups
  • crossword puzzle: on one geographic group
  • maze activity to free the trapped whale
  • compare and contrast a longhouse to a pithouse
  • cut and paste matching cards or memory game
  • herbivores vs carnivores - matching
  • animal tracks - drawing
  • complete graphic organizers, short answer questions, play with words
  • make words, cloze on buffalo uses, graphic organizers and more

Each section begins with a colouring page.

Woodland First Nations

  • complete a word search, examine and describe tipi designs, complete a crossword, discover traditional uses of birch bark, unscramble the words, and do a cut-and-sort activity matching 12-word cards to 12 pictures

Iroquoian First Nations

  • unscramble the words, read and complete a chart on the Iroquoian longhouse

Plains First Nations

  • follow the directions, create words using "scrabble" letters, and complete a cloze writing on the use of buffalo parts

Plateau First Nations

  • complete a word search, solve the "berries" problem, complete the "berries" chart, read about the interesting "soapberry"

Pacific Coast First Nations

  • discover the significance of the totem pole, fill in the graphic organizer, learn about the animals most commonly found on the totem pole, read about the cedar tree, complete the totem pole/cedar tree crossword, free the whale trapped in the maze

First Nations of the Mackenzie & Yukon River Basins

  • do the cut and paste activity on herbivores vs carnivores, read about caribou and complete the graphic organizer, "follow" the animal tracks
