Description
I have divided the book into six sets of questions, dividing the nearly 500-page book into a six week unit. I intend to use this as an independent reading choice in my Native Literature course, though this could easily be used for book circles or a whole class novel.
QUESTIONS PACKETS:
This is a versatile set of questions, which could be used in a variety of scenarios:
- Independent Reading packets.
- Small group discussion questions.
- Large group discussion questions.
- Interview questions with partners.
- Bell ringers (small journal prompts).
Each chapter set includes anywhere from four to eight questions. Some are recall / factual to check for reading, but most questions are more robust, asking students about their perspectives on certain plot choices or character development. The first three of six packets also include a section of terms brought up in the book (mostly Anishinaabe, though some phrases used in a unique way).
JOURNALS:
These Connect & Reflect journal entries are designed to use post-reading for each section. Students are given two options to choose from in the journal entries and they can be used for in-class writing practice or homework. There are six sets of two questions, and I have used these successfully with grade-level work and honors students alike. I change the expectations for each group (for on-level freshmen, for instance, I have them aim for seven grammatically correct sentences, and for honors sophomores, I have them think of it as a mini-essay exploration).
ADDITIONALLY:
Included in this download is a zip file with a Word document, a PDF of the Word document in case our systems are not compatible, and an answer key. These are easily transferred into a Google doc as well or could be pasted onto Google slides for whole class discussion.
