Learning Objective

Given a series of sentence or a short reading passage, students will find and underline the featured literary device. Students will also write their own sentences containing each literary device.

Description

You've taught your students the seven most common types of figurative language... now what? Next comes lots of practice! These no-prep figurative language worksheets are ready to go for you. Just print and go! A worksheet that focuses on each of the following literary devices is included: similes, metaphors, onomatopoeias, alliteration, personification, hyperboles, and idioms. These figurative language worksheets consist of both reading exercises and writing exercises.

First, students will have an opportunity to identify the given literary device within a set of short sentences. Next, they will be presented with a longer passage, and they will be asked to highlight the sentences within the paragraph that include the given literary device. Finally, students will write their own sentences that feature each literary device. This worksheet packet was designed for students in 4th through 6th grade.

The figurative language worksheets for similes, metaphors, onomatopoeias, alliteration, personification, and hyperboles consist of these three sections:

  • Part 1: Students underline the (similes) in each set of sentences.
  • Part 2: Students read a short passage and underline the (similes) within each passage.
  • Part 3: Students write their own sentences containing (similes).

The layout of the idiom worksheet is slightly different. Part 1 contains a matching activity where each idiom is matched to its meaning.

All answer keys are included.

********This resource is available in two formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
  2. Easel Activity- This version is paperless, and it is designed for students to complete it on a device. It contains content identical to the worksheets, but each worksheet is split between four slides and contains a lot of color. Students use the highlighting tool to highlight each literary device. They also fill in text boxes and write their own examples of each literary device.

I encourage you to take a look at the PREVIEW, where you will be able to see both versions!
