Supporting Indigenous Resources for Inclusive Learning for Elementary and Middle School Students

For Distance Learning - Teachers can assign the Reading Response Booklet to students using Google Slides or PowerPoint (for Teams.) The booklet is editable, and students type their responses in editable text boxes. Online copies of Fatty Legs can be found at Epic!(I believe teachers can sign their students up for free!)

In-class Environment - The hard copy novel study units were created to support a single novel read-aloud, should a class set be unavailable. Student work booklets have been designed to extend the understanding of each chapter. Each unit has a duration of about three weeks, appropriate for grades 4-7 and integrates Language Arts and Social Studies learning outcomes.

Student workbooks have been created to accompany each chapter with an answer key and assessment rubrics.

Both units, Fatty Legs, and A Stranger at Home, are also available for individual purchase.

Comprehension strategies used in these units are: connection, visualization, question, infer, and transform.

Fatty Legs, and A Stranger at Home, written by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margret Pokiak-Fenton and illustrated by Liz Amini Holms depicts the hardships an Inuit girl experiences while attending a northern residential school and her unexpected struggles reintegrating back into her community.
