Description

Famous Engineers Class Play or Assembly

Cast of 20 – 30 (easily adaptable up or down)

Duration: Around 15 – 20 minutes not including music suggestions

The cast includes various famous engineers (as you would expect!) including Robert Stephenson, Sir Charles Fox, the Montgolfier Brothers, Sir George Cayley, the Wright Brothers and Sir Frank Whittle – along with some rather less obvious choices, namely a pharaoh, a Roman gladiator, a bird plus some truly great songs/movie theme tunes to keep things lively and fun.

Sample Text:

Music 5 Driving in My Car – Madness

(Mini performance – see Production Notes)

Narrator: (Looking at his script) Hmm. We seem to have skipped a few years. I think we should go back to the Romans, who did after all, build all those roads!

(Enter Roman gladiator, looking around, confused)

Narrator: You look a bit lost, sir?

Roman gladiator: I’m looking for my chariot!

(Horse appears)

Roman gladiator: Ah well. A horse will do!

(Roman gladiator and horse return to their seats)

Narrator: Shame about the chariot! I rather wanted to show the first form of car – even if it was just a horse-drawn one!

(Whole cast joins in to make a loud BROOM BROOM sound of a motor car)

(Enter Rolls and Royce, ‘driving’ a Rolls Royce)

Music 6 Money Money Money – Abba (Chorus)

Narrator: Well, that certainly is some automobile! A Rolls Royce, right?

(Rolls and Royce nod)

Narrator: Course, to own one of these cars

Rolls: (Interrupts) In your dreams!

Royce: No offence but this beauty is only for the super-rich!

Rolls: She is rather special!

Royce: Just look at the body work

Rolls: The fine leather seats

Royce: And all the polished woodwork.

Rolls: You won’t find that in

Narrator: (Interrupting) Yes, OK. I’ll say it for you, the kind of motor car I can afford!

(Rolls and Royce shrug their shoulders, and ‘drive off’, waving)

Narrator: Huh! Oh, to be rich! In the Rolls Royce league!

Music 7 Rocket Man Elton John (Chorus)

(Enter Robert Stephenson, in overalls and oil-covered hands)

Robert Stephenson: Some of us are more down to earth, hands-on types!

Narrator: Aha! Robert Stephenson, I believe!

Robert Stephenson: At your service!

Narrator: And didn’t you have a rather famous father?

Robert Stephenson: George Stephenson, the Father of Railways!
