Description
As I started teaching English First Peoples in BC (this is also good for any English class which wants to respect Indigenous/First Nations viewpoints such as Ontario's NBE courses), I didn't want to eliminate all the classic literary canon- such as one of my favourites, Fahrenheit 451! I designed this unit to connect the themes of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury to themes present when discussing Truth & Reconciliation- themes such as:
- Oral storytelling as a powerful force of resistance
- Questioning authority and government structures
- The role of oral storytelling in preserving identity and culture
- The importance of community and connection
In this unit:
- A final project for students to have a choice of ways to present their knowledge, with multimedia and traditional written assignments among some of the choices
- A lesson comparing and contrasting Western stories narratives to Indigenous Canadian narrative structures (to help them compare and contrast the narratives in Fahrenheit 451 to an Indigenous story- can use this with a Ray Bradbury short story, as well!)
- A creative project that promotes character analysis through creating a seating chart for the characters in Fahrenheit 451
- An in-class essay with planning pages to help students structure their thoughts and the essay page itself.
Note: The Novel Study Project and narrative lesson are all found in my "Semester-long bundle". If you already have that, I highly suggest you just pick up the Seating Chart project and In-class essay instead of purchasing this and getting repeat products!
