How the Collection Promotes Close Reading:

Research shows that grasping the meaning of an entire text can be overwhelming for children. That’s why these stories and questions sets are broken into sections for close reading. The questions sets and text marking cues are designed to encourage students to go back to the text multiple times and dig deep for understanding.

How the Collection Aligns to the Standards:

CCSS RL.3.1: Questions sets address this standard for both asking and answering questions. The questions and stories are broken into sections so students can dig deep into the text to find meaning. There is a text marking component with each question set.

CCSS RL.3.2 The fables, folktales, and myths included are collected from around the world. Each includes activities that guide students to find the moral of the story. Also included are tools to help students identify the story elements – the necessary components of recounting stories.

RL.3.3 Understanding characters occurs in several ways in this collection. The collection includes tools to help students describe characters. Also, finding the moral of the stories is done through examining the characters and how their actions contribute to the events. Finally, tools exploring the points of view of characters are also included.

RL.3.6. Tools guiding students to uncover point of views are included. It is important to understand that when the Common Core refers to point of view, it is not concerned with 1st person, 2nd person, or 3rd person point of views. Rather, point of view refers to how one sees the world or the story based on their beliefs, values, experiences, and attitudes.

L.3.4 Each question set includes vocabulary from the story. Five vocabulary graphic organizers are included to help students understand the words on many different levels.
