FREE Career Exploration Reading Comprehension Passages and Questions

There are moments that forever change our lives as educators. Two years ago, I was sharing a story about an architect with a group of third graders. One of the boys had always (and only) dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. After reading this story, he said, "If I don't become a baseball player, maybe I'll become an architect."

It occurred to me how little time I had been spending helping students imagine possibilities for their futures. Since then, I've made a point of opening discussions about careers and have found that students who can imagine themselves in successful careers have much more motivation to excel in school.

This had led me to a new passion: I'm thrilled to offer a series of reading passages designed to help students learn about various career options while also developing listening, reading and writing skills.

The passages in this series are ideal to read to students in first and second grades. It is truly never too early to help students begin to imagine possibilities! With each passage, there is a simple written response sheet prompting students to consider whether they would be interested in the career field and benefits/drawbacks of the career option. Bringing these simple response sheets home can lead to fabulous family discussions!

For students reading at a third or fourth grade level, five multiple choice questions and two written response questions are included with each passage. The questions focus on topics such as:

• central message
• finding text-based evidence
• recognizing statements of opinion
• problem solving

I've always taught reading, writing and listening skills, so I find I can integrate this content into my teaching without having to find "extra time."

This free sample includes two career-focused reading passages, along with the written response options and multiple choice questions. I currently have 7 sets of fifteen passages each available and also a money saving bundle of all 105 passages.
