What educators are saying

You really are saving me with these math units. My second one purchased and helping my students stay engaged, involved in the slide discussions and getting minds thinking. Thank you!!
Unbelievable Math unit! Very well laid out, easy to follow and great concepts to reach students! Worksheets come with answer sheet as well! Thank you!

Description

Looking for a way for your students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of fractions? This unit is for you! Complete with google slide lessons (which can be converted to powerpoint) using virtual manipulatives, this unit uses many questions similar to past provincial assessments and focuses on fraction number sense, using tools and drawings to represent understanding. As well, if you are uncomfortable with fractions yourself, the lessons will help you develop your own conceptual understanding!

The following topics are addressed:

-representing proper, improper and mixed fractions

-representing equivalent fractions

-comparing and ordering fractions (proper, improper and mixed) based on same denominator, same numerator, size and number of pieces, and benchmarks (0, 1/2, 1)

-adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators

-multiplying whole numbers by unit fractions and proper fractions

-dividing whole numbers by unit fractions and proper fractions

Although this unit is based on the expectations of the New Ontario Curriculum, it is suitable for teaching these concepts to students in grades 3-8.

If you would like to check out a sample of this unit, download the free lesson and worksheet from day 1: Comparing and Ordering Fractions

*NOTE: At the beginning of the unit when fraction concepts are being reviewed, and when grade 5 topics are being introduced, the grade 5 and 6 lessons and work are the same. When the grade specific expectations are being addressed (e.g., multiplying whole numbers by unit fractions for grade 5, and whole numbers by proper fractions for grade 6), the work is different. The final assessments are different for each grade.

These math reviews can be found in my store, and cover EVERY expectation in the math curriculum. Questions are similar to past provincial assessments.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand a fraction 1/๐˜ฃ as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into ๐˜ฃ equal parts; understand a fraction ๐˜ข/๐‘ as the quantity formed by ๐˜ข parts of size 1/๐˜ฃ.
Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
Represent a fraction 1/๐˜ฃ on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into ๐˜ฃ equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/๐˜ฃ and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/๐˜ฃ on the number line.
Represent a fraction ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ on a number line diagram by marking off ๐˜ข lengths 1/๐˜ฃ from 0. Recognize that the resulting interval has size ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ and that its endpoint locates the number ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ on the number line.
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
