What educators are saying

A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This was an excellent resource. I ended up tweaking and omitting a few things, but the foundation start was excellent and informative. I turned the quizzes into a Google form. Beware of the mythology story if you teach in an uber conservative state like I do. Thank you.

Description

This is a detailed, image-rich, animated, seventy eight-slide PowerPoint on etymology. Feel free to use it as is or edit it to suit your needs.

It's divided into several parts:

  • Notes for the teacher
  • An Anticipatory Activity to generate interest and connect to prior knowledge.
  • Etymology defined.
  • The Greek and Roman Empire and how they form the base of many English words.
  • The Mythological Origins of English words
  • How to Interpret Etymological Entries in Dictionaries.
  • An Etymology Scavenger Hunt Activity

There two quizzes at different intervals throughout the presentation. Answer keys are included.

The presentation is designed with note-taking in mind. It includes an anticipatory set, lecture and notes section, a fun guided-practice activity, and a quiz. The PowerPoint is also scaffolded to accommodate special needs, learning modalities, and EL students.

The PowerPoint first introduces students to the Greek and Latin origins of words, via Athenian Greece and the Roman Empire. Those early civilizations and their influence on English is examined.

After a quiz on part one, students learn about the mythological origins of words through the story of the mythic Greek lovers Echo and Narcissus.

The PowerPoint is 100% editable. You can change it to suit your needs.
