Description

Being able to estimate the square root of number to the nearest tenth is a valuable skill that can be difficult for middle school students. I paired this activity for students' interactive notebooks with clothesline math activities for great outcomes. (See http://www.estimation180.com/clothesline.html, and I am not being compensated for providing this link.)

My students loved color coding each problem on their number line, and they definitely felt accomplished by the end of the activity by being able to do something they initially thought was difficult.

There is a space at the end for students to write their own summary of the process of estimating square roots.

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form 𝘹² = 𝘱 and 𝘹³ = 𝘱, where 𝘱 is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that √2 is irrational.
