What educators are saying

My students loved this activity; it was a great way to engage them in digging into the history of Timbuktu and sparking curiosity. Thank you!
I downloaded this resource because I needed something no-prep but still related to what we were doing in class - this was perfect! This kept students busy and engaged.

Description

Escape from Timbuktu: A Mansa Musa Adventure is a digital escape room that contains everything your students will need to learn about Mansa Musa, the historical king of the African empire of Mali. Students will complete this digital escape room entirely online. So you can assign it for in-person or for distance learning. All of the directions that students will need to follow are included in the escape room. That means no prep work for you! Just post the links and watch students have fun while learning.

The escape room contains various learning activities including:

  • A hidden image activity and questions based on an original, primary source map of the Kingdom of Mali (circa 1376)
  • Locks that require students to interpret and compare maps of medieval and modern Africa
  • A color lock based on an online reading and questions
  • A letter lock based on a short online video and questions
  • A series of locks that students unlock, one at a time, by completing online research to answer the question assigned to each lock

The narrative of the story will lead students from one activity and lock to the next. Students will also be asked questions about the story to make sure that they're following along, not just skimming.

The escape room is divided into two parts. At the end of Part 1, students will have unlocked a passcode that they'll need to begin Part 2. In that way, you can easily divide the escape room into two class periods. Your students will have so much fun completing the escape room that they won't want to wait until day two! At the end of Part 2, students will have gained a passcode to turn into the teacher as proof that they've completed the escape room. In the end, you'll be pleased that your students were so engaged in a lesson that required no prep work for you!

This escape room makes use of Google Forms, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. Before purchasing it, make sure that your school or educational institution has the ability to access them.

This lesson is aligned with standards for history/social sciences at the state and national levels.

The lesson includes:

- Links to Part 1 and Part 2 of the escape room

- The escape room itself contains all activities and directions for students to follow.

- Teacher procedures and lesson plan
