What educators are saying

My students loved this activity. It was a great end of the year reading activity that practiced what they've learned while having fun

Description

It's almost time for Summer Vacation! If you are looking for a highly engaging breakout focusing on reading and solving a mystery then this Escape is perfect! This fabulous paper/pencil breakout includes reading a fiction story and completing 4 puzzles to "escape". This is The Case of the Sneaky Cat. And it's easy prep!

➡️In this No Locks Escape Room students complete tasks to earn a method of ‘escaping’. The prep for the events with NO LOCKS is minimal- just making copies. No locks or boxes! Teams solve puzzles to "unlock" the code to find the sneaky cat's hiding place.

How Does a Reading Escape Work?

  • Teams will read a short story about a student arriving home on the last day of school. He must locate the family pets to get them ready to travel. But, the sneaky cat is hiding.
  • They will complete 4 puzzle tasks. Each puzzle gives the students a secret word.
  • After collecting 4 Secret Words students use a decoder to create a 4-digit number.
  • The 4-digit number ends the mystery and The Case of the Sneaky Cat.

What is the story?

Students will read a short fiction story about a hiding cat.

  • Clues in the story do not lead to the cat.
  • Then a note is found with instructions to complete 4 puzzles.
  • "Neighbors" help the pet owner complete the puzzles.
  • The puzzles and code will reveal the cat's hiding place.
  • The case is solved!

Puzzle tasks that must be completed are:

  • Match words to categories and unscramble letters to find the secret word.
  • Use words from the story to complete a crossword puzzle and find the secret word.
  • Use a coordinate grid to determine letters that lead to the secret word.
  • Use a coded message to find clues about the cat's location.
  • Use a Decoder with the 4 secret Words to "escape" this mystery!
