Description

Emily's Blue Period by Cathleen Daly is a book that deals with the difficult subject of divorce. Emily's mom and dad have recently divorced and now her dad has moved to another home. Through art, Emily is able to cope and begin to deal with all of her new emotions.

3 sections:
1. Color in the picture of the crayon and write the color. Then describe what moods these colors create.

2. Write about Picasso's life from the point of view of Picasso.

3. Write from Emily's point of view about what her blue period and cubism has taught her.

Cubism is taking a natural form and breaking it into geometric shapes where there is not one focal point. This seems symbolic of Emily's life and her experience with her family's divorce because she is taking her life and it is being broken into different sections while a new normal is being created and then put back into a shape. At the end of the book, she creates a collage that combines her mom's home with her dad's "cube" to make a whole shape (heart), which makes her feel like a whole person.
