What educators are saying

I used this resource with adult learners and in conjunction with a Microsoft Outlook unit. The students found the information easy to digest and useable in their day-to-day communication. They enjoyed getting to read and write "BAD" e-mails.
I loved this unit. I made some tweaks to make it fit exactly what I was expecting out of my students, but overall, I was so pleased in the difference it made in the emails that my students are writing to me this year.

Learning Objective

Students will learn how to write clear, organized, formal, and respectful email correspondence to teachers and other professionals.

Description

Have you ever received an email from a student that was written in a rude tone? Emojis, slang, all caps, incomplete sentences galore? We all have, and it's enough to drive us up the wall! But! What if students have just never been taught how to use professional etiquette when addressing a boss or superior? That realization inspired this unit, which revolutionized the way my students emailed me from that point forward.

Every year, I recommend teachers of all subjects in middle and high school teach students either a full unit or a refresher course (depending on age and background experience) all about writing an email to teachers. This practical, real-world "how to" lesson is relevant and necessary for a digital world.

People check their email daily...and often, multiple times per day! In short, email matters. We need to teach students how to represent themselves well when communicating in this genre.

In this writing an email mini-unit (which lasts approximately 3-4 days, depending on the length of discussions and number of activities used), students will laugh and learn as they read engaging examples of poorly written emails (and a few intelligent ones as well).

The focus for this email etiquette unit is on emailing teachers, but students will be able to apply what they learn to writing an email for any professional email situation.

IDEAS FOR USE:

  • Full career readiness professional writing unit
  • Pick and choose the lesson components you like best
  • Introduce and sprinkle in activities throughout the year for spiral review
  • Extras are great review to stick in a sub folder!

FORMATS:

  • All of the files in this mini unit are included both as secure PDFs and editable PowerPoint files.
  • The introductory lesson is included as a Google Drive link, but if you'd like to have Google Drive links to use with all of the files included, you will be interested in this digital unit or in this bundle.

This lesson is cross-curricular! Teach students to think critically, to write for an authentic audience, to evaluate mentor texts based upon established criteria, to adopt a professional tone, and to write business-type emails with style.

Great for a beginning-of-the-year activity or any time it fits with your curriculum.

Assessment? Since most of the lessons are intended to be worked on and discussed in class, completion grades would be appropriate, but you don't have to assign grades at all. The unit is intended to be a light-hearted, confidence-building, non-intimidating way to remind students of proper, respectful email etiquette.

Teaching Time? The duration of this unit depends on how many activities you choose to incorporate as well as on the length of your class period. A suggested lesson plan with additional, engaging links is provided, but you can deviate to make it fit your needs.
