This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 35 questions requiring full sentence answers.
  • 25 questions requiring full sentence answers. (10 removed from the 35 question set)
  • 25 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.

PART 2 – Writing task and just for fun

  • For the first task, students need to draw Buddy followed by describing what he looks like and writing about his personality. Then to write about what they felt was the funniest part of the movie and also write about the times they felt sad, happy and excited for Buddy.
  • The second task is just for fun. A word search and crossword puzzle. The student needs to work out the 10 answers for the crossword, which then gives them the words for the word search. Answer key included.

The movie is about an orphan named Buddy who stows away in Santa's sack as a baby and ends up at the North Pole. After being raised by elves, an adult Buddy goes to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs. Thus the adventure begins.

How can movies help students learn English?

Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study

- There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarizing.
