Description

Celebrate Earth's beauty with these Earth Day Reading Comprehension activities! These comprehension passages are designed to help your students learn how to take care of our planet by reducing, reusing, and recycling. They'll also read about the history of Earth Day and what it means to 'Go Green'.

This 3rd-5th grade reading comprehension resource includes printable & digital version. You will find three comprehension passages & matching activities for each passage. Drag and drop, written response, multiple choice, and graphic organizers are all included for the digital / Google Slides version.

Here's What You'll Find Inside:

+ Vocabulary Posters (Color & B/W)-- Includes key vocabulary terms for each passage. These slides can be used to introduce vocabulary prior to reading each passage or can be assigned to students to help them review terms throughout the unit.

Passage ONE:

+ "What is Earth Day?" Informational Passage- Students will learn about the history of Earth Day and how it has impacted how we celebrate Earth Day today.

+ "What is Earth Day?" Show What You Know Written Response- Students will answer these text-based questions in a written response format.

+ "What is Earth Day?" Show What You Know Multiple Choice- Students will s to respond to several ELA based questions. These questions target 3rd-4th grade ELA standards. (supporting details, author's point of view, context clues)


+ "What is Earth Day?" Cause & Effect Chart- Students match the statements from the text to create matching cause/effect sentences.

+ "What is Earth Day?" Vocabulary Map- Students will fill in the vocabulary maps for each of the key terms within the text.


+ "What is Earth Day?" Vocabulary Check- Assessment: Students will match each term with its definition

Passage TWO:

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Informational Passage- Students will learn different ways in which we can make a difference to keep our earth healthy!

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Show What You Know Written Response- Students will answer these text-based questions in a written response format.

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Show What You Know Multiple Choice- Students will respond to several ELA based questions. These questions target 3rd-4th grade ELA standards. (author's POV + main idea + text features, text structure)

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Problem & Solution Chart- Students will fill in the chart to add a problem and/or solution for every statement based on the information in the text.

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Ways to Help the Earth- Students will show what they know about taking care of the planet by deciding which globe provides an example of a way in which we can help the earth.

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Vocabulary Map- Students will fill in the vocabulary maps for each of the key terms within the text.

+ "Let's Make a Difference!" Vocabulary Check- Assessment: Students will match definitions to the correct term and use the terms in the correct context.


Passage THREE:

+ "Waste Management" Informational Passage- Students will learn about the three Rs of waste management. (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

+ "Waste Management" Show What You Know Written Response- Students will answer these text-based questions in a written response format.

+ "Waste Management" Show What You Know Multiple Choice- Students will respond to several ELA based questions. These questions target 3rd-4th grade ELA standards. (text structure + text features + main idea)

+ "Waste Management" Main Idea & Details Chart- Students will fill in the chart with key details and main idea from the text.

+ "Waste Management" Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- Students will decide if each picture if an example of reducing, reusing, or recycling and sort it under the correct box.

+ "Waste Management" Vocabulary Map- Students will fill in the vocabulary maps for each of the key terms within the text.

+ "Waste Management" Vocabulary Check- Assessment: Students will match each term with its definition
