Description

Bring fun and educational Earth Day math activities to your classroom with this exciting Google Slides™ presentation! With engaging math topics such as addition to 20 using number lines, subtraction within 20, introduction to fractions, and place value, your students will be challenged to learn the important topic of planting trees in an exciting way. Their mission? To help reduce deforestation and bring life back to the forest.

Not only is this math activity an excellent opportunity for students to engage with mathematical concepts in a game-like setting, it's also a chance for them to positively contribute to their world. Through this engaging activity, they will also better understand the harmful effects of deforestation and the importance of planting trees.

Background: They plant a seed after successfully answering the first activity. As they continue with the math challenges, they will "plant" the seed as it grows into a tree (sequencing type). They will also read a short text about deforestation and the problems it causes.

This is perfect for review during math centers. Students can answer it individually, in pairs, or with the whole class.

Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases:
10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones - called a “ten.”
Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used.
Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
