Writing with the RACE Strategy: RACE is a writing strategy to help students answer passage-based, short response questions in a formal style, with using clear reasons and evidence from the text, and to provide concluding statements. These informational texts are quick, easy reads, so that your students can focus on writing.

Do you have a wide range of readers? This money-saving bundle combines four of best-selling products, giving you 40 passages that range from 4th grade to 9th grade reading level. Perfect for special education, differentiating, and scaffolding for struggling readers.

    R: Re-state the question

A: Answer all parts of the question

C: Cite the text to provide evidence

    E: Explain your citation

Why use the RACE strategy? RACE is a mnemonic device that helps students write open-ended constructed responses. This strategy is especially helpful for struggling writers and students with disabilities, but it can also be helpful scaffolding for all students. It teaches students to do what good writers do naturally—re-stating the question in a complete sentence, answering all parts of the question, citing evidence and fully explaining.

Literature Skills Activities: These fun and interactive task cards and sorting games are perfect to review and reinforce types of conflict, figurative language, rhetorical devices (ethos/logos/pathos) types of irony and literary terms. These cards have examples taken from authentic texts and popular YA literature. Students will love the hands-on nature of these tasks, which are adaptable and easy to differentiate.

Vocabulary Context Clue Practice: Do your students struggle with understanding and using vocabulary? This no-prep, printable packet helps your students master using context clues to determine a word's meaning. It shows examples of definition/explanation context clues, synonym/restatement context clues, antonym/contrast context clues, and inference context clues. Vocabulary words were chosen from the list "100 Words Every Middle Schooler Should Know" from the American Heritage Dictionary.

Students will practice multiple choice as well as constructed response questions, all based on using context clues to determine a word's meaning.
