Description
HIGHLY EFFECTIVE Regents Prep for NYS ELA Exam
I found that my students actually had a hard time understanding the directions for the ELA Regents exam and because of that, their scores were lower than we were expecting. So, I became a leader in Regents prep to give students all the tools they need to succeed. Ten years later, I have found strategies that WORK. I’ve included tips, tricks and preparation for all three sections of the Common Core NYS ELA Regents Exam.
For each section (multiple choice, argument paper and text analysis), I’ve included both a “student facing” document to hand out and a “teacher facing” document with a script of what to say for each section, links to sample tests/answer keys, hints for how to demonstrate strategies and ways to help them through each section of the exam.
Included:
Part 1: Multiple choice STUDENT handout
- Tips for understanding multiple choice strategy
- Hints for decoding vocabulary
- A breakdown of regents question styles-and how to approach each type
- Practice test link
Part 1: Multiple choice TEACHER handout
- Divided into “Student sees” and “Teacher says” columns
- Tells you what to say to help explain everything on their handout
- Suggested “script” to read as they look at each tip
- Answer key link
Part 2: Argument Paper STUDENT handout
- Simple breakdown of the task
- Clear set goals for marking up the text
- Sample outline
- Sample thesis statements based on past regents exams
- Strategies for creating a thesis
- Sample papers link
Part 2: Argument Paper TEACHER handout
- Divided into “Student sees” and “Teacher says” columns
- Includes a script for what to say to explain and elaborate on each tip
- Links to sample papers and a sample test
Part 3: Text Analysis STUDENT handout
- Simplifies the instructions for this multiple layered task
- Gives students the “magic sentence” to include in this essay
