Description
Learn all about the science of buildings and how to earthquake proof them!
This bundle includes colorful flashcards, student activity book, teacher background and experiment instructions.
There are 4 lesson plans included in this bundle. Each lesson is about 45 minutes to an hour long.
This bundle includes the following:
- Science Activity Book with reading passages and experiment observations sections.
- Worksheets (individual pages) – If you choose to NOT print it as an activity book.
- Lesson Plans with teacher’s notes and background information
- Materials List with six STEM challenges (with instructions and templates)
- Colorful Flashcards
- Printable materials for the lesson.
Lesson 1: The Strongest Shape
Students will learn about the significance of shapes in a building design.
- Mini Experiment: Identify shapes they see in famous buildings and structures.
- Introductory Experiment: Hypothesizing and testing which shape is the strongest and how much weight they can carry (template available)
- Advance Experiment: Students will construct the test the durability of a shape by creating an entire structure using their selected shape.
Lesson 2: How to Earthquake Proof Buildings & Structures
Discover the affects of an earthquake and identify the factors incorporated to building earthquake proof buildings.
- Experiment: Incorporating the different factors into building their own LEGO structures and test the durability of their structure on the shake table (Shake Table is also made by the students)
Lesson 3: The strength of materials
Understand the importance of materials used in buildings.
- Mini Experiment: The strength of spaghetti and the strength of an arch.
- Experiment: Test the strength of eggshells by applying weight and observing how much weight they can withstand. (This challenge requires pre-class preparation)
Lesson 4: Application of the unit - STEM challenge
- Students will be challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower using spaghetti and marshmallows. The towers will also be subjected to earthquake testing by using the shake tables built in lesson 2.
Happy Teaching!
