Description

As a culmination to a Drug Prevention Unit, this activity engages students with real world scenarios for them to practice.
This booklet can be used with students as young as 3rd grade through middle school.
I have a parent cut and staple together the booklets for the elementary students. The kids cut out and glue the labels and techniques for getting themselves out of situations where peer pressure is going to make them do something they know isn't right. We discuss the different techniques and have them fill in something that is relevant to them in blank spaces ( they have asthma or grandparent died from smoking). Decorate their own cover.
When finished (usually takes the whole class period to put together), the next lesson is to put students into groups and give each group a "scene" that they have 10 minutes to put together to perform for the class. The point of their skit is to get the class to guess which "Just Say No" Technique they are portraying. Helpful guidelines--no props (except chairs), no acting like they're drunk or high (it's just the beginning of the peer pressure), and if they get too silly they have to sit down. When the scene is over (usually less than 2 minutes) they should freeze, so everyone knows you're finished and can clap. Then the class can guess which technique they used.
I tell the kids to save the booklets in their sock drawers at home since they never know when they might need to look something up when they are older!
