What educators are saying

This resource was great in helping students who need more hands on connections to learning new vocabulary words.
This was a great tool to review our nonfiction information. The students struggled with it on their own, so we did this in small groups and discussed the meaning behind some of the words. It was good to review root words and some of the affixes used.

Description

This Doodle Vocabulary resource will introduce your students to 39 words associated with nonfiction. Students will learn about types of nonfiction, kinds of nonfiction writing, nonfiction text features, nonfiction text structures and additional words associated with the genre. Students will not only learn the new vocabulary words, they’ll also showcase their learning with some doodles!

You can use this resource in a variety of ways! You might:

  • Create a single packet filled with the doodle vocabulary pages that students can reference all year long.
  • Select specific pages that relate to particular texts that students are studying and highlight words.
  • Teach all the words at once as in introduction to nonfiction.
  • Have students add definitions to their doodle vocabulary all year long.

What is included?

Everything that you’ll need to use this set of Doodle Vocabulary is included in this resource! You’ll find:

  • Resource Overview, Tasks, and Doodle Information (3 pages)
  • Instructional tips and tricks for teachers (5 pages)
  • A Doodle Vocabulary cover page (This is great if students will be creating a vocabulary packet.)
  • Vocabulary Test for all words (3 pages)
  • Teacher Keys (vocabulary and test)

In this resource, you’ll also find that there are 2 options for the Doodle Vocabulary pages. This way, you can find the set that works best for your class or for individual students.

  • Doodle Vocabulary Blank Notes – In this version, students will need to write out the entire definition for each word. (5 pages)

How does it work?

Completing the Elements of Nonfiction Doodle Vocabulary is simple and meaningful!

  1. Students fill in the definitions for each of the words (either with guided notes or by writing the entire definition).
  2. Sometimes students will showcase their understanding of the word with doodles.
  3. Other times, students will demonstrate their learning by responding to sample passages and even labeling an article with nonfiction text features.

Why doodle?

  • When students doodle or create sketches of something, they’re activating different parts of their brains.
  • This helps students to make connections.
  • Simple sketches or doodles are also powerful mnemonic devices, so students will also be able to remember the words and their meanings longer.
  • Plus…doodling in class makes learning instantly more fun and engaging!
