Is it fiction or non-fiction? How can you tell? Outlines to students what they should expect to see in a fiction and a nonfiction text. Use before doing a read-aloud or introducing any text. Do a sneak peek of your book, and direct them to the first slide which introduces the students to fiction and nonfiction by eliciting from them if the text they are about to read resembles more a fiction text or a nonfiction text. Have students compare. Depending on the genre of the text you are reading, present students with the second slide; which describes in detail what they should expect when they read a fiction vs. nonfiction text. Have them show understanding by using the self-guiding retell chart for either fiction or non-fiction.
