Description

Multiplication and division are closely related and interchangeable. These skills are usually taught separately; unfortunately, this disconnects the two concepts and often causes confusion. These materials teach division using a method that enables the student to learn multiplication at the same time. This technique makes learning multiplying and dividing quicker and easier. Because no writing is required, students as young as 3 can learn these valuable skills.

Gifted students have enormous learning potential. Unfortunately, there can be obstacles that can limit that potential. These students have intense curiosity and their need for intellectual stimulation often results in them becoming bored or disruptive in the classroom. Their cognitive skills develop faster than most students. This can provide additional problems for 3-6 year olds, whose reading and writing skills lag behind their ability to understand math concepts. Gifted kids want to learn through their own efforts rather than with adult assistance. Distance Learning for Gifted Kids is specially designed to address these and the many other requirements of the 3-6 year old gifted student.

These materials use Skip-counting Cards to minimize the need for reading and writing. The cards provide a number of ways to explore, practice, and demonstrate knowledge without the need for writing. The layering cards are designed to provide an effective way for the student to learn and practice at their own pace and through their own efforts. The materials included in this skillbook have been improved by incorporating student input collected from decades of teaching. The emphasis is on students’ perceptions which can differ greatly from adults. This means details like capitals, font, color, and unique symbols have been adjusted or added to increase student clarity and decrease confusion. Some of these attributes may look foreign, unexpected, or just strange to adults who are used to math appearing a certain way.

From introduction through mastery, these materials support student thinking and deliver on a deep understanding of multiplying and dividing. Our students have already shown that these materials work and now you can share in their success. Hear from the families themselves:

“I am the parent of three neurologically unique children each with vastly different strengths and challenges. The Code Math has met the needs of all three of my children. Even my most reluctant child has found success with the methods and materials used. To watch them go from avoidance to confidence is both a relief and a joy.”

Paula T. (Canadian homeschool family)

“I was always looking for content that would both challenge my children’s thinking and inspire their love of math. The Code has done just that. Even I am surprised at the pace of their learning and the depth of their understanding.”

Karine S. (French family)

“We love the fact that we can essentially do it from anywhere. We travel a lot. I feel good knowing Math will always be a part of my children’s life.”

Ragna W. (German family)

"Devan and Makai look forward to classes each week! The curriculum is easy for them to follow and understand, they love the interactive approach and the pace is just right. Each lesson leaves them with a feeling of success. Code Math is a wonderful approach for all children including those that find math challenging and those who are ready to advance faster than their peers "

Kristen M. (American Montessori family)

“The Code Math has helped our 6 year old son Deven to quickly and easily grasp some pretty advanced concepts without being intimidated. His experiences have fostered a strong curiosity and an interest in math.“

Sturt G. (American family)

“Our daughter Ella had early experiences with math that made her want to give up on the subject. Once she started working with the Code Math her attitude really changed. After a few months, she was eager to learn and had new confidence. We never thought we would see her so relaxed and happy doing math.”

Ann P. (American family)

Unique Vision

AVK ED was founded by Grace Cord. Grace is a 25-year veteran teacher and tutor. Her many years of experience include teaching students ranging from preschool through high school in a wide range of academic settings. She also founded Alta Vista Academy and successfully operated this school for 7 years. Over this time she realized there was a great need for math materials that would be effective with the large percentage of gifted students at her academy. Grace started developing and implementing her own math curriculum based on the materials and techniques that worked best. Eventually, this led to the start of her curriculum company. As a Montessori trained teacher, she has a keen interest in fostering individualized independent learning. Her materials have found innovative ways to merge the benefits of Montessori methods for use in more traditional settings. This skillbook blends the individualized pace and practice of Montessori with the tracking and testing of traditional teaching.

Grace’s own struggles with handwriting as a child are the driving force behind the designs. Her inability to write and pay attention to the teacher at the same time caused her much frustration and humiliation in her younger years. She wanted to create content that allows children to show what they know in multiples ways that are not so dependent on writing. The Code Math provides practice and assessment with minimal reading and writing allowing all children to unleash their full math potential. She turned her obstacles into your children’s opportunities.
