Learning Objective

Students will learn to define unknown words using context clues in text.

Description

Based on a song about the history of Hip Hop and rap music, this vocabulary activity will keep your students engaged using song lyrics as a reading passage while they are determining the meaning of unknown words with context clues worksheets. This activity has multiple-choice answers and targets content-vocabulary words from the song.

Students will listen to the song then use the song lyrics as a reading passage to complete the activities detailed below.

The song for this activity takes an in-depth look at how Hip Hop culture and rap music formed in the Bronx, New York.

Accommodate your students using audio!

Do you teach EL/ESL or SPED students/SWDs? Have them use the song as a read-aloud with subtitles. Students can also slow down the song to make listening and comprehension easier. Instructions are embedded into the activity for students.

This activity includes:

- the song with subtitles embedded into the Google Form

- the song lyrics embedded into the Google Form

- self-grading quiz format with the answer key

- 7 multiple-choice, context clues questions for defining content vocabulary words in the song

- a short-response activity where students define a word of their choice from the song using context clues.
