Description

The joys of History, Music, Dance and Travel all converge amidst a backdrop of turquoise waters, volcanic landscapes and cool island breezes. Whisk your students away on an exciting cultural tour without ever leaving the classroom!

'Destination: Caribbean’ is a three-minute documentary short dedicated to one of the most diverse regions on Earth. Shot on-location in Tobago, Antigua, Puerto Rico and Jamaica, the film presents a brief sample of contemporary Caribbean life – one we hope that you and your students will enjoy!

Every purchase includes the accompanying seven-part essay series, also entitled 'Destination: Caribbean.' This multimedia curriculum uses the region's most popular music forms – Reggae, Calypso, Salsa, etc. – like a time machine, transforming rhythms, lyrics and melodies into a vehicle for understanding the historical conditions that created them.

Many of the Caribbean's traditional dance steps, costumes, instruments and even religions, evolved as a way for slaves to preserve their culture and undermine their captors . As we discover, a Rastafarian hill farmer who ekes out a living from Jamaica’s northern coast has little in common with the gaudy pageants of Carnival, yet both are a living testament to the unknown masses who came before them.

Along with the 'Destination: Caribbean' essay series, each purchase includes ALL of the following Common Core-aligned materials for grades 6-8:
