What educators are saying

Great project based learning lesson for students to do alone or in groups. Self explanatory and teacher friendly to understand.

Description

The Design A Map: Project Based Learning Activity provides students with a challenge to inquiry and learn about maps, types of maps, elements of maps and ultimately design and create their own map as a final project. This is a great way for students to get excited about mapping skills and understand maps through using mapping skills themselves through research online, data collecting, and creating.

THE CHALLENGE
Congratulations! You’ve been selected for a design
challenge of creating a map for a purpose and place of your choice!

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about:
-features of maps
-types of maps
-how maps are used
-how to design a map (cartography)

Through this challenge, you will learn through research online and in books about what maps are, features of maps, types of maps, and how to make a map. After collecting your research, you will design your own map for a theme and place of your choice! Your map can show any place (real or from a fictional world) and can be for any purpose. Perhaps, your map isn’t made of just paper and also acts as a three-dimensional object or sculpture? Who knows! The possibilities are endless when you use your imagination.

ALIGNED TO NEW BC CURRICULUM! This meets the big ideas, curricular competencies and content of British Columbia's New Curriculum.
