► Defining words and concepts is important in every subject area. Therefore, the ability to tell or write definitions or descriptions is an important skill in academics.

► Many special needs students can’t produce or recall definitions.

They may not have sufficient vocabulary. They frequently don’t understand how to organize words into a definition.

► Some of the earliest school experiences involve showing and telling about an object. For many students, language impairments preclude participation in this activity.

    • There is a page of communication symbol pictures to help students tell category, function, material, color, size, shape.

    • There is a teaching unit on referential definitions that includes visual cue worksheets/guides, examples and practice items, a game, activity cards, and more.
