Description
This bundle includes 15 separate documents that I have used with extraordinary success with my 3rd year German students (mostly 11th graders) to read, understand, discuss, memorize, and recite the famous poem "Der Erlkönig" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This unit takes about 7-10 days (approximately 20 minutes per day) to practice with additional practice on their own.
Materials include (in no particular order:
1-Blank races: 4 versions of the poem with different types of words missing (verbs, nouns, adjectives/adverbs, prepositions.) Students use them as warm-up or to "race" against their classmates to fill them in first
2-Drawing: Poem with blanks in the poem for students to fill in and an area for them to draw an illustration for each stanza
3-Quiz: Assessment for students to demonstrate understanding of the poem after reading and class discussions. KEY INCLUDED!
4-Stanza Strips: Poem divided into small stanzas. Students cut strips apart and put them in order
5-Vorlesung Modifications: For students that are struggling to recite the poem entirely from memory, these are some options I give them so they can complete the assignment for a lower performance grade
6-Vorlesung Rubric: The rubric I use to grade the poem, as well as a copy of the poem I use to make notes as they recite poem
7-Vorlesung Peer Grading Table: Table I use to have audience rate peers. I don't necessarily count this as a grade, but it keeps the audience engaged and I sometimes do prizes for the highest overall score or highest scores in any given category. Students get points for completing the table.
8-Exam Style Questions: Questions that can be used on a bubble-sheet style midterm or final exam
9-Nomen und Verben Wortschatz: Vocab list of nouns and verbs to help students master vocabulary
10-Der Erlkönig PowerPoint: Poem with illustrations to introduce and practice
11-Auswendig Lernen: Actual assignment with copy of poem, glossed vocabulary terms, and resources
12-Ratz Fatz: (also known as "Slap It") Student clipart flashcards they cut out and "hit" as you read poem aloud to practice it
13- Ratz Fatz: Vocabulary list to be used as warm-up for or follow-up to game
14-Strips: Poem formatted so it can be cut into strips with a single line on each strip so students can practice putting them in order.
15- Top 10: Review PowerPoint game (each slide worth 1 point--like a "countdown") to review before quiz.
