Daily Math Word Problems (Bell ringers) for First Semester

Five months of math word problems to use as bell-ringers or for review!

Covering the months of August through December, there is one unique problem for every day. These materials can be used every year as the information is timeless.

Each problem contains a factual historical connection to the date. It is fun and interesting to learn these facts while practicing math skills at the same time.

Some of the skills that are included:

• basic computation

• equations in one variables

• measures of central tendency

• fractions, decimals, and percents

• ratios and proportion, unit rates

• graphing

• volume, area,circumference

• unit conversions

• prime factorization and GCF

• time, money

• combinations

• expanded and scientific notation

Some problems are short and relatively simple. Others involve multiple steps. All involve translating a word problem into math terms and solving. Many of the problems contain extraneous information and numbers that are not needed in solving the problem. Daily practice helps students improve their ability to identify the essential information and correctly set up the problem.

Each problem is presented three ways. The problems are written sequentially for the teacher's reference. They are also given two to a page which can be copied, cut, and distributed as half-sheets. Lastly, each problem is written in a larger font on separate pages for projecting onto the board; these pages also contain illustrations. You can choose the format that suits your class.
