Cultural Lesson Plan Bundle: El Cuy, Sor Juana, La Ciguapa

Each of these lessons will help your students to grapple with and comprehend an unfamiliar reading in the target language. Then, students will speak in groups about the aspect of history or culture in Spanish! Each lesson wraps up with a written exit ticket in which they will synthesize their learning for the day in Spanish.

What are the topics of the lessons?

• “El cuy” is a cultural lesson plan about the traditional guinea pig dish that is served in communities in the Andes mountains in Peru, Ecuador, & Colombia. Your students will be fascinated by this unusual dish and the customs that surround it!
• "Sor Juana” is a cultural/ historical lesson plan about the child prodigy from colonial Mexico and her fascinating journey to world-renown as an author and outspoken feminist. Your students will be intrigued by her life, and especially her choice to devote herself entirely to her studies at the age of 16 by becoming a nun!
• “La Ciguapa” is a cultural lesson plan about the spooky legend of La Ciguapa from the Dominican Republic. She is a nocturnal spirit who preys on those who stray into the woods at night. Your students will be fascinated by this creepy folktale and all of the strange characteristics of La Ciguapa!

Each of the products included in this bundle are perfect as a stand-alone cultural lesson plan, an emergency substitute plan, or an enrichment lesson in a larger unit of study.
