What educators are saying

Used this as part of a Skills lesson. Students were engaged the whole time and instructions were very clear!
After analyzing population pyramids, discussing how they're creating, and digging in to how they're created, this was an excellent assignment to to practice making them on our own. I like that the data was readily available and easy to use.

Description

Overview

Students will understand how to read a population pyramid by creating one! This activity includes two templates to help your students create their own population pyramids, as well as population data for four countries from the U.S. Census Bureau's International Database. The activity includes blank cards if you or your students would like to create additional or specific population pyramids. Instructions are included to help navigate the U.S. Census Bureau's website in order to obtain the data.

Activity

  • Students watch a short TedTalk video about population pyramids (link included).
  • Students review a series of population pyramids and practice predicting future population changes using the pyramids (link to example population pyramids included).
  • Students are given population data for a country along with a template for creating their population pyramid (see thumbnails). There are two templates provided. Once students complete their pyramids, there are two questions they must answer.
  • Students are grouped according to the country they were given to graph, and predict the future population changes of their country, as well as problems that my accompany these changes.
