In my classroom…
- I start with the KWL Chart. Students fill in the K/W sections before the lesson begins.
- We go over the vocabulary cards and have a quick discussion on each one.
- As a class, we read one of the emergent readers and discuss what we learned.
- In small groups, I use the other emergent reader for additional practice.
- Students complete the flip book with a partner or group while I am working with small groups. They do NOT finish this all in one day. Sometimes I assign certain pages and other times I have them work at their own pace.
- I assign the symbol/picture sort and sequencing worksheet as independent work.
- Students complete the reading comprehension pages at the same time. Depending on my students and their needs I sometimes read the reading comprehension to them and have them independently answer the questions. This can also be done in small groups and you can pull students based on their needs.
- I assign the differentiated writing prompts to the students and they complete them independently.
- Students fill in the L section of the KWL chart.
- This usually takes course in a week’s time.
