How many times have you gone to a store and had to decide which item was the better buy? Your gut may make your choice but common sense and a little mathematical knowledge would make the choice easier. Actually in many stores when you try to read the product label on the shelf, you will find on the label the words “unit price”.
In this packet, each student will be asked to look at everyday items that people may purchase and try to determine which situation provides the best price for their money. This set of activities will reinforce each student’s ability to perform the basic operations related to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
I hope that you and your student’s will find the problems applicable to their daily lives and answer the most dreaded question a teacher hears from their students, “when will I ever use this”?
