Description

This two page lesson contains 11 articles (a couple being more lengthy documents to deeply analyze the important issues) accessible by online web links (PDF also provided) and 12 thought provoking questions to help students cultivate critical thinking skills as they compare and contrast media coverage from 3 American media sources and 1 media source in the Middle East.

In addition, 2 articles are provided (web links and PDF) from two American advocacy organizations digging into the subject further to provide illumination and enlightenment. This lesson will help students think, find their own voice and persuasively communicate their ideas.

Wars make TV channels and media outlets famous. World-War II made Time magazine; the Gulf war the Cable News Network (CNN); the war on terror Fox News; and the Arab Spring Al-Jazeera English (AJE). Perhaps this explains why news media networks so enthusiastically and consistently cover wars. Nothing keeps viewers tuned in like fear, unrest, disorder, controversy and insecurity.

There is much to discover when you compare September 11, 2001 media news coverage from the Cable News Network (CNN), Al-Jazeera English (AJE), and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The decade of terrorism and its media coverage telling the story reveal political and corporate interests in war without end, spreading fear throughout the world, and strategically demonizing those who disagree with us (particularly those in oil rich nations where the hand of hegemony can grab the most in the name of freedom, liberation and democracy).

Listening to different perspectives and examining the "news" from various sources can illuminate truths hidden behind polished narratives to portray one country and its government more morally superior than the rest. Truly serving the viewing public by showing the whole uncensored news (including the sometimes less popular other perspective) always prevails over media that shows governmental propaganda and sells itself for profits. The truth eventually is brought to the light and out lives all lies.
