Vocabulary Graphic Organizer

• Guides students in using context clues to determine the meaning of key words in the text.
• Words are color-coded for easy differentiation. (I had my students work on the organizer in similar-ability pairs! Red = below level; Purple and Blue = on level; Green = above level)

Sequencing Graphic Organizer

• Guides students in sequencing the major events in the plot, so they can begin to notice important details/clues and solve the mystery.

Suspect Graphic Organizer

• Students record key details and make inferences about each of the characters in order to determine key suspects in the mystery.

Clue Record Graphic Organizer

• Students use to keep a record of secret messages, clues, and riddles in the story and work out their meanings, using text evidence to support their conclusions.

Final Verdict Statement

• Students use this paragraph frame to write a persuasive paragraph about which suspect they believe committed the crime in the story. Requires students to cite direct evidence from the text to support their opinion. (I always end the unit with a group discussion in which students share these "verdict statements" and argue their opinion!)

**I have used these resources for gifted students in grades 3-5. I usually give each student a "Case File" with all these graphic organizers included and have them work in partners to complete each one in order!**
