    Description

Lessons with notes and activities. I used these with 7th graders. Can be used with many grades to teach and/or review. You could also find videos to help teach these concepts. Might want to encourage students to draw pictures/emojis in addition to (or instead of) definitions to help them better understand and remember.

I spent a week on each set of words. some were new and some were review. I did this as a warm-up, so it only took about 5-10 mins each day.

day 1: introduce the words, their definitions, and sometimes provide example sentences. students copy information into journals while you explain

day 2: students copy given sentences while you explain/review (note that affect/effect has 2 slides/days that are like day 1. These are tricky even for me, so spend more time learning them and less time with sentences.

day 3: students copy given sentences and fill in the blanks with correct word. Key on slide after activity.

day 4: same as day 3 with new sentences OR have students create their own sentences with the words of the week

Day 1-4: it's also good to point out the words you're focusing on in any type of mentor text or readings you're using so students can see these words being used in context instead of isolated sentences like the examples provide. You can have students look for these words in sentences after they read the story for content.

day 5: students take quiz without journal. (I always had them complete this independently and silently. Teacher can decide if this is independent or group work. Teacher can decide if each one is a grade or if multiple will be combined as 1 grade (major or minor). 15 mins max for quiz

27 quizzes with at least 10 questions each and a key for each one. Questions are fill in the blank or multiple choice. Quizzes are split into groupings. 1-3 per page.
